Be 'Friend of the Sea' ??? or the murderer of the future???

Common Sense

This is common sense, every resource in the earth has a limit.  Harvesting it too heavily without letting it rest and reproduce, you will empty it one day.  Overfishing is definitely a PROBLEM[1].

Friend of the Sea (FOS) is a NGO based in Italy promoting and certifying the sustainable fisheries and sustainable aquaculture (both the wild and farmed seafood).  Rather than building barriers and impacting with fisheries directly, FOS helped to protect the sea from heavy exploiting in a more curvy way.  For companies that satisfy the strict compliance and criterion after the audit will be certified the 'Friend of the Sea' logo in their products.  The audit is run by an independent ISO accredited certification auditor.  Measurements are different among species.  You pass?  Congret!!!  You get the logo in your product and the world knows that you are friend of the sea, friend of the earth indeed.  You help save the sea?  People will reciprocally purchase your product as a repay to your kindness.  As what the other ecolable does, FOS arrange events as well as created a comic/cartoon character – Friend of the Sea Hero to promote ‘saving the sea’.

Basically the key to 'Friend of the Sea' is sustainable by not over exploited - the less you exploit and better the way you consume, the more are preserved for the future.  The ecolabel is mainly funded by the annual royalties paid by the certified companies.  50 out of the 75 aquaculture producers worldwide who requested the audit have been successfully certified.  Around 86 fisheries and fleets are being certified around the world as well.  You may not be familiar with the fishery and aquacultural names but some of the major retail participants are Carrefour Italy, Coop Italia, Eroski, Manor and Finiper.

Is it that difficult to satisfy the below criteria?

Brief aquaculture criteria as follow quoted from http://www.friendofthesea.org

  • no impact critical habitat (eg: mangroves, wetlands, etc)
  • compliance with waste water parameters
  • reduction of escapes and bycatches to a negligible level
  • no use of harmful antifoulants, GMOs and growth hormones
  • compliance with Social Accountability
  • gradual reduction of carbon footprint

Brief criteria for fisheries are as follow quoted from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Friend_of_the_Sea

  • the product should not originate from over exploited (nor depleted, data deficient or recovering) stocks
  • the fishing method should not impact the seabed
  • the fishing method should be selective (below the world average for discards, which in 2005 was about 8%).
  • the fishery should respect all legal requirements.

Now, lets watch the video

So how does the above video persuade other people to become friend of the sea?

Stream fresh fish, especially the rare deep water fish is one of the favorite main dish in Chinese culture.  Shark fin soup is a must for wedding banquet in Hong Kong society as well.  In general, Hongkonger are seemed as materialized and Consumerism[2].  They value quantity of life rather than quality[3].  They like to compare themselves with others and wanted to look good in front of the others.  So when inviting other people out for dinner, Hongkonger would always order rare and expensive seafood to reflect their wealth and as well as to emphasize the importance of the invitees.  This is the culture and it is like some sort of endless chain reaction that will never stop (if we don’t stop it now), and this cannot be changed easily.  However, nowadays most of the generation X are well educated in terms of environmental protection.  Consumerism though seems the dominate value in the city. However there is a Hong Kong City-State Autonomy Movement recently[4].  The city is evolving.  They all know that this is a right and ethical thing to do as a human being.  But wait, someone else will do it, why me?  Let me ask you a question here.  Have you ever been in a crowd transportation hesitating whether or not to give your seat to an elderly.  As soon as someone gave their seat faster, you regret and blame yourself about your shyness and hesitation.  And as soon as another elderly comes, you give them your seat right away to repay the debt.  Hongkonger are just sometimes to shy and to slow to the right behavior.  If someone can lead their way, they will follow right away.  (For more details about this phenomenon, check this video out on youtube - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fW8amMCVAJQ&hd=1)

Local people advocate the protection of our own place/own value/own language. This is the foundation of our video that we want to save the ocean in order to save our home. Everyone can work on it by just simply purchase the accredited seafood product. Consumption is the key activity in our place. Instead of reduce the consumption, we are promoting a good consumption habit. Gen X is the biggest spenders in HK and they are the key decision maker for dining out. They are our target group of the video. With considered they want to eat the high quality of food like shark fine and Salmon. That's why we put those pictures in the video so as to make them feel guilty and hope they will return the society by new consumption habit.  So in the above video, we are trying to arose the hidden sympathy of the video reader by adopting the ethos, logos and pathos of persuasion as well as by the six persuasion techniques learnt from the article 'Harnessing the Science of Persuasion' by Rober B. Cialdini.

In the video, we have quoted some findings from some professors to enhance the creditability of the video/speaker (Ethos).  We then shown the audience some cruel pictures to make them feel guilty (Pathos).  We also included some real pictures, statistic and solid facts about what the reality is like (logos) in the video.  We tried to convince them by facts.  And we also adopted the Liking, Reciprocity, Social Proof, Consistency, Authority and Scarcity as follow.

1         Liking – we praise/appreciate the people in Hong Kong about their effort spent in pervious environmental protection.  For example, Hongkonger helped pick up plastic bits leaked from a sinking ship on the beach.  This is to uncover real similarities and offer genuine praise[5].  This is to establish a positive relationship between the video and the audience.

2         Reciprocity – we tried to express that sea/fish has given us the nutrition for our growth and survival and we should therefore in return treat them well.  The hidden message here is that if the fishes are all gone, will human being be gone too?  We should therefore repay in kind.  Give what you want to receive[6].

3         Social Proof – logos of famous retail participant and famous artist in Hong Kong are also supporting this mission as people follow the lead of similar others[7].

4         Consistency – at the end of the video we asked the audience to like and share it out to others as people align with their clear commitments.  By liking the video and sharing it out to friends, their commitment becomes active, public, firm and more importantly people are more committed to what they voluntarily admitted[8].  In this case, buying the FOS labelled food.

5         Authority – names and titles of famous professors in the video acts as the authority as people are more deferred to words of experts[9].

6         Scarcity - People want more of what they can have less of. We are trying to highlight the possible loss of the valuable food source instead of what people stand to gain[10].

Summary – this isn’t the end

To summarize, We were trying to engage the reader's emotions by means of arose their sympathy -->guilty --> frame our goals by establish the common ground ---> vivid examp[ole --> connect emotionally with emotions.  Working along in this assignment, we also realized how important for us to save the sea so to save our future.  We do hope that the video we made in youtube can be some of our minor contribution to persuade the Hongkonger to start purchasing the FOC certified product in order to sustain our future.

I consider your video is very convincing and make great sense for us to participate into the activities of being friend with the sea.

Firstly, your video uses the rhetorical strategies by presenting many bloody and cruel fishing pictures, which can indeed grasp my concentration on it and then encourage to think about the issue seriously.

Secondly, there is an ironical scenery in the video that a couple and their parents in a wedding were surrounded by many bloody dead shark. We all know that wedding is a happy thing, but the picture make me feel angry and sad, how could people celebrate their own happiness by killing and eating that much fishes?

Finally, the video shows future possible direction and make a clarified introduction of the label.

In a word, I think the video has great persuasive effect.

I don't understand why we have to save the ocean? You are showing a picture of the ocean and ask: What will the ocean be like in 2048 but you start by only showing nice pictures of the ocean. The audience is not thinking of the destructions of the ocean caused by humans. YOU HAVE TO SHOW PICTURES HUMANS HARMING THE ENVIRONMENT. Like all the rubbish that ends up in the ocean or oil and the consequences of that.

They are just fishing – you are just saying that we safe them for extinish, I think you meant extinguish. But I am scared of sharks. So actually I am happy that they are dying.

You should have listed the influences of humans doing fishing like 1. Overfishing 2. Bycatch 3. Harming seabeds etc. The audience is not educated here.
Also the sound: say what you need to say. Where and what shall I say something?

However I am really impressed and persuaded by your blog. The headlines are insightful and catching – well done.

    1. Dear The Outspoken,
First of all, thank you for your comments. I do admit that there is still a lot to improve in our video. Your idea and comment is valuable to us, especially criticism is always a positive motivator for people to improve. And yes, we believe we should also include some sea bed, boats and fishing pictures so that the video would be more coherent to the missions of FOS. Perhaps pictures of those ban trawling that harms the sea bed. Bascially FOS promoted the idea of 'NOT over digging from the ocean'. As we were targeting the Hongkonger who might not be familiar with WHAT is over digging. Hong Kong is now a very developed city. Fishing industry seem to be too far from the generatin X so we adopted a more popular topic in Hong Kong which is shark killing. Eating shark fin is good to your body, especially to your skin. They are valuable and expensive. Chinese people or let's focus onto the Hongkonger therefore love shark fin soup for dinner so much to exhabit their wealth as well. So because of its demand, finshers kill sharks heavily to obtain their valuable fin for selling to the Chinese market. And if we keep killing and killing endlessly, they will extinct one day such as all other kinds of species. Understood from your comment that you don't like shark at all because they are such a dangerous sea creature. However, isn't that's just their instinct to kill for survival as all other kinds of creatures (including human being). You may agree or disagree, but we do believe that all animals in this planet deserve some rooms to live. If we keep hunting and hunting greedyily without leting them reproduce, people will not have enough fish to eat one day. The message is if we wish to sustain our future, we start saying, telling yourself and other people doing what we need to do today. Pass the message out, role modelling yourself to spread the idea across HK, as well as to the world.
      Cheers, Asquare

I think is an interesting topic for me. And the video is a good way to give us a caution that if we continue to damage oceanic ecological balance and marine environment, we would murder our future. I think you are an excellent persuader who can get me thinking about the future of sea creatures.

In your video, you mentioned that our consumption behavior might be a kind of encouragement to the cruel killing activities and cold-blooded trading in seafood market. I am quite agree with you that I think the problem of overfishing and over exploited are just caused by the social preferences of seafood and business interests. Individual behavior can have huge influence in an industry when it becomes a social tendency. When World Wildlife Fund described the word of overfishing, they mentioned that billions of people rely on fish for protein, and fishing is the principal livelihood for millions of people around the world. Especially in most cities beside the sea, seafood occupies the majority of local people’s diet structure. In Hong Kong, as you showed in your essay, people tend to provide rare and expensive seafood to reflect the wealth and respect in dinner table. So it is a social problem of the oceanic ecological balance and marine environment in Hong Kong due to the consumption tendency to seafood. Even though I am not a Hong Konger, I still achieve an emotional resonance with you to through the bloody and inhuman scene of wedding with dead shark. And after you described the phenomenon about harmful activities to ocean, you transfer to through the current environmentally-friendly activities in Hong Kong to awake Hong Konger’s consciousness of ecological protection recommend to recognize FOS label to become the friend of sea.

But I still have a suggestion that your persuade can be better if you could show more severe oceanic ecological environment in Kong Hong like the blooding sharks in wedding. I agree with your idea of being friend of the sea and feel angry with the damaged activities in worldwide, but I do not know whether it needs to be introduced to Hong Kong or not since most of the fierce and cruel scenes are not happened in Hong Kong.

The video is really touching, and helps people rethink their own consumption behavior profoundly.

I learn some value persuasion skills from this video, which is I am really appreciate, for example, authority use and social proof. In our group video, we are only considerate the social norms. However, we should have taken the experts’ and famous people’s opinions into account. The precise data is one of the strong ways to persuade. Remarkably, the logo of Hong Kong celebrities who are supporting this mission is quite persuasive. Most importantly, the topic of sustainable seafood is really hot right now in Hong Kong. We can see these posters in MTR adverting. The link between the video and the advertising posters can enhance the effect of sustainable seafood persuasion. For me, every single time I pass through the posters, I always think of this video and would like to commit this promise consistently, because lots of people surround me would act the same way and are proud of being part of it and we feel responsible for saving the sea and our future together.

The process of the video is going smooth, and the subtitles are fit into the video. However, the length of the video can be shorter, making more simply to easy remember and the effect of the video can be stronger.

  5. It contains a very detailed introduction about the label and a better example about major retail which uses the label. It also provides useful links about how aquaculture or fishers hurt the sea. I like the video, it is convincing and the music is beautiful, I like the song. In BJ, there are also some people eat shark fin soup; they treated their guest with shark fin soup not only to show their hospitality but also their own social status. I totally agree with the point that we should promote a good consumption habit instead of reduce the consumption. However, the blog said that “they put some cruel pictures to make people feel guilty”. I had a friend and he is local here, he’s nice but he wants to eat dolphins if he gets chance. I showed him pictures and he still feels nothing. I think if this project will continue you can find some more efficiently ways to appeals for protecting the sea.
You guys gave some interesting examples and used many different theories which were really good in my opinion. Using 2 or 3 theories but containing more details would be better I think.

  6. Frankly speaking, this is the best blog I have seen. First of all, its title is appealing to me and it makes me want to keep reading. Then, the structure is very clear: the conspicuous sub-headings; related picturesque. Also, it seems much more organized by using the bullets. For the content, the use of questions at the beginning encouraged people’s emotions. And also, there are sufficient evidence to support their statements and let people know about the serious of the issue. The whole blog is logical and easily to be understood. And the most impressive part is the video. It is completed with text and graphics. The pictures showed in the video are easily resonated with the audience. What’s more, at the end of the video, there are many recommendations which are closely related to the label to suggest people how to purchase sustainable seafood. Thus, I think it is an outstanding blog.

  7. I think your video is the best one I have seen, not only because the background music is one of my favourites, but the whole structure that is really integrated and logical. First of all, the title of this blog and video has impact force and can cheer our audiences up, which directly leads people to think about the link between saving the sea and our future.

You show some beautiful pictures of the sea to cause people's attention at the beginning of the video. Then some merciless and bloody pictures are shown to describe the current situation that people are not kind to the sea. What impressed me most is the sentience "Do you realize you are also part of them?" that it lets me feel shocked and compunctious. Then you point out the "Friend of the Sea" (FOS) and show some ways they tried to save the sea. This process of the video is really logic and smooth to persuade people to distinguish the logo of FOS to save the sea.

In a word, you did a good job. Well done.

  8. A touching video!
You compared the clean ocean in the beginning with the bloody ocean in the latter. Very touching and impressive. I have a question though, is this logo only suitable for over fishing or is it also suitable for ocean pollution? Because by seeing "friend of sea" I'd think of the pollution human did to the ocean first.

After I saw the blog, I noticed that some seafood brands had the “Friend of the Sea” logo. It is a pretty good label that makes contribution to marina protection. I found some brands, which used FOS label, were introduced in the blog. I think the manner is so good because it helps me know which seafood brands advocate the environmentally friendly idea. Besides, it is not like other label, FOS used a special way, creating a cartoon character, to propagandize the image and idea.

For the label, it advocates sustainable exploitation instead of over exploitation. It reminds me some regulations about fishing from some cities or countries. For example, Canada regulated specific fishing season and fishing areas according to species. It also included total allowable catches. They pay attention to ecosystem through forbidding poaching, marine pollution and so on.

Another good part is the illustration about cultural analysis of Hong Kong. You use some rhetorical ways, such as Hong Kong people’s behaviors, thinking and so forth. They have strong persuasion to express the effectiveness of FOS using.

For the video, I was shocked from it. As a member of the world, human promote the development of science and technology, while the world is destroyed by human. There is no doubt that marine animals are also the parts of our world. If marine animals disappeared, the seabed would suffer more severe damage. So how about ocean? Unimaginable! I believe that not only marine animals turn into fossils, but also human also like those. The video showed some real examples around us. I knew an increasingly number of Hong Kong people devoted themselves in ocean protection. They took good examples. Hence, after I see the video, I will take action to protect marine animals and ocean. However, I found a picture in the video was not about FOS, it was WWF, even if the theme was also about sea saving, therefore, I suggest you can change that picture in order to make your video more precise.

In conclusion, I think the video and the content of article combine very well. I will start to concern about whether the seafood products that I want to buy have the FOS label or not.

Your video is so convincing that I began to rethink myself as I was watching it.

I was born in an in land provinces and far away from the ocean. But my hometown is famous for its thousands of lakes and rivers. So I have deep emotion with the fishes no matter whether they are salt-water fishes or not. I can feel that in recent years the number of the lakes is decreasing and the rivers are always cut by the dams. When I was a child, I could see big fishes that almost as the same size as me very often. While I haven’t see such big fishes for years. And the dams stop fish migration and threat the sustainable development of the fishery. And I know that many salt-water fishes live in fresh water in childhood and go back to rivers to breed their children. That’s why I am deeply influenced by your video.

when doing this task, my team chose a similar theme, the dolphin protecting. Some researches shows that the mercury level in dolphin eaters is relatively high. And the mercury also exist in the shark fin. So maybe you can connect the fin-eating customs of Hong Kong to the health condition to make it more impressive.

Thank you for your video, and I like your video pretty much.

As we all know, the creature came from sea and rise by sea. Thus, “be friend with sea” is our responsibility and preventing the sea from being destroyed should become every one’s common sense.

Through the briefly introduction, well-structured essay and well-organized video, your team provided the clearly description of “how to be friend with sea”. Furthermore, at the end of video, your team also introduced the label that related to recommend people how to purchase sustainable seafood. Plus, the back music is very nice and attracts audiences to go through the whole video.

However, when talk about destroys of sea, the first shot to me is the pollution of sea. Sea pollution has become one important influence factor of whole environment. If you can add some content about how to prevent the sea pollution such as dropping pollution to sea, the oil leakage, etc. the essay would be enrich.

Above all, I believe you did very good job.

  15. Dear group members,
I have to say, I really like this blog. I really agree that people are just sometimes to shy and to slow to the right behavior. If someone can lead their way, they will follow right away. In additional, the follower related video is very very interesting and well demonstrate the phenomenon mentioned above.
The video link saving the ocean with saving our home, and tell people everyone could do some work for saving our home, it is not far from our daily lift, everyone could make contribution for saving ocean. Also, the video shows some cruel picture to the audience, it has strong visual impact to audience, of course it also could make the some guys feel guilty. And these cruel pictures become sharp contrast with the beautiful picture of the ocean at the beginning of the video.
I knew your group want to show more information, however, in my opinion, the video is little long. On the other hand, if there are more detail content in article for your adopting of “ the Liking, Reciprocity, Social Proof, Consistency, Authority and Scarcity”, the article will be more enrich.

  16. Hello
I think this video is convictive. I felt very comfortable after watching this video. Firstly, the song of this video is wonderful. An appropriate song is very important. Audiences would be willing to sit through a 3-minute video if there is a beautiful song. It is one of the advantages of video. Secondly, the pictures of the bloody fishes impressed me deeply, especially the pictures of shark fins. Being a Chinese, I felt sorry about that because shark fin is a popular dish in China. Due to its rarity, shark-fin soup is now being eaten at some special occasions to demonstrate a host's good fortune. We can see from the other pictures of the video, China is not the only place where sharks are eaten. We really need to protect sharks immediately. Thirdly, this video has a good connection with Hong Kong culture. It shows some pictures that many Hong Kong people are working on it. In the end, the video shows the label and tells us what to do. It has a good structure.
In my opinion, it’s a good video as a whole. But there are also some flaws. First of all, the video is a bit dilatory. For example, at the beginning, I think there are too many pictures to show the beauty of the ocean. Secondly, “What the ocean like in 2048? ” The answer is not very good. The pictures are weak. If there are some powerful pictures, I think the video will be better.
    Good job.

The video is cool, concise and has a electrifying effect. However, I feel there are some pictures quite similar with others, You can choose something different to make the video more diversified and multiply.
As to your words, I think your description is academic, you classified well for those information, it's an advantage. But on the other side, some parts didn't describe clear for the readers, for example "Social Proof".
